The ESSP provides open and persistent access to ontologies for experimental, observational, and computer modeling data in the Earth Sciences. ESSP ensures quality, curation, and long-term persistence of ontologies to support multidisciplinary science and transcend domain boundaries from environmental science to ecosystems and climate modeling. ESSP also provides tools to efficiently use semantics for data and metadata discovery, annotations, and mappings between metadata schemas.
Use the Earth Sciences Semantics Portal to browse, search or navigate concepts actively used in the Earth Sciences communities, relate community keywords and taxonomies to your metadata, expand your searches while also increasing precision, and see how other projects use semantics. As scientific experts in a specific domain, help specify concepts so that other scientists from a different domain may use your data and results effectively and accurately, provide comments, corrections, or mappings to concepts and components in the portal. Sign-in to submit new ontologies, projects or technologies that use semantics.
The Earth Sciences Semantics Portal promotes the integration and interoperability objectives of DataONE by providing an access point for tested, mature semantics technologies, encouraging best practices for enhanced discovery and access through standard terminology.
ESSP is currently using BioPortal core Tag 1027 and BioPortal GUI Tag 1039. Some capabilites are directly accessible by REST services. Funding was provided in part by the DOE Office of Science and NSF through the FAST program, and by NASA through the ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center for Biogeochemical Dynamics (ORNL DAAC). The ORNL DAAC is funded by the NASA Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) project.
